LAMP: Frequently Asked Questions

+ 1. WHO may volunteer with LAMP and WHO do volunteers serve?

You and your family*, friends, and believers from your or other congregations may all volunteer with LAMP! Volunteers can join an existing team or sponsor their own team through their church. Volunteers should have a clear commitment to the Christian faith, willing to work with other Christian denominations, and willing to understand and accept another culture – the Indigenous families of northern Canada. *Note: LAMP’s policy is that volunteers under 16 years of age must be accompanied by parent/guardian

+ 2. WHAT may volunteers do to serve?

Volunteers on a LAMP mission team mainly serve by teaching Vacation Bible School to children in an Indigenous community in remote areas of northern Canada. They share the love of Jesus Christ, forgiveness, and the gift of salvation through faith in Him through storytelling, music, art, drama, crafts, prayer, and other activities. Volunteers are asked to foster relationships while in the northern community, and most teams have ongoing contact via social media.

+ 3. WHERE may volunteers serve?

Volunteers with LAMP serve Indigenous communities in the provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. Many remote northern communities are isolated and only accessible by plane in summer (ice roads in the winter), while others are reachable by road, train or ferry. + 4. WHEN may volunteers serve?

Volunteers serving on a LAMP mission team hold Vacation Bible School during July & August. Our neighbors in the North are so “thankful for the message of God’s love and forgiveness shared in all the different activities” (community comment). The number one request LAMP receives is to spend more time when we visit and come more often. Thus, opportunities for ministry throughout the year exist. VBS is the highlight of the year for many!

+ 5. HOW much does it cost for volunteers?

Each team is financially responsible for their teaching materials brought along, their meals while in the community and traveling to and from the community, any hotel stays, and incidentals. If you serve a drive-in community, your team is responsible for costs associated with driving. Due to the high costs to fly teams in to northern communities, LAMP reserves the right to limit team numbers. Each team member is asked to make a donation to cover the entire cost of their airfare into the community with a minimum donation of $350 per person.
